Yakima River Flooding: West Richland, Benton City and Prosser
Flood stages at Kiona, flood insurance, and cleaning up after river water.
BENTON CITY · WA
On the Yakima River, about 15 miles west of Richland.
Benton City is a small town on the Yakima River, beside the vineyards of Red Mountain. The river gauge at Kiona, just across the water, is the one the whole area watches when the Yakima rises. That makes flooding a real concern for low-lying properties, on top of what every rural home deals with: private wells and pressure tanks, long water lines to barns and shops, and pipes that freeze when January wind blows across open ground.

In town, the homes are older and mostly on crawl spaces, so slow leaks under the floor go unnoticed. Out on larger lots, wells, pressure tanks and long water lines add more places for a freeze to cause a break, sometimes far from the house. Near the river, floodwater brings silt and contamination: porous materials usually come out, and everything left is cleaned and disinfected before drying.

Whether the water came from the river or from a split line in the well house, it needs to come out quickly and the structure needs to be dried properly.
Most calls from Benton City fall into a few groups: standing water removal, cleanup after frozen and burst pipes, water heater and appliance leaks, and river or groundwater flooding. Each ends the same way, with drying and repairs.
